Guter Grund – biodynamic terra preta
What is the best soil for the garden?
We don't know ourselves. But this one probably comes very close. Because it contains everything that matters for healthy garden soil.
Highly fertile worm compost: supplies all important organic nutrients
Rock dust: supplies all mineral nutrients
Biochar: Binds CO2 in the soil and, thanks to its large surface area, holds water, nutrients and micro-organisms in the soil for a long time
The whole mix is fermented and, above all, matured with the biodynamic compost preparations for months.
Biodynamic terra preta
- binds CO2 permanently in the soil, thereby contributing to climate protection
- is suitable for all plants (except orchids and bog beds)
- supplies plants optimally with nutrients
- contains a large proportion of worm humus
- contains rock dust (magnesium, potassium, calcium, iron and sodium)
- retains moisture optimally (especially important on sandy soils)
- contains no chemicals
- is peat-free
- produced in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with regional ingredients.
- ready to use straight away
Areas of use and notes
1. Improving soil over larger areas
- Use: Terra preta on its own.
- Dosage: Spread 8-12 litres per m² evenly and work into the surface.
- Care: Keep the area mulched at all times to protect soil life and supply nutrients.
- Coverage: 1 bag (4 litres) covers 0.4-1.2 m².
2. Planting out young plants
- Mix: Mix terra preta 1:1 with garden soil.
-
Application:
- Dig a planting hole and put 0.5-1 litre into it.
- Put the plants in and mulch the bed.
- Extra tip: For heavy feeders, put a handful of terra preta under the mulch in July.
- Coverage: 1 bag (4 litres) for 8-20 plants.
3. For sowing
- Mix: Mix terra preta 1:1 with garden soil.
-
Application:
- Sprinkle into the seed drill, cover with soil and sow.
- Mulch the area lightly.
4. For lawns
- Mix: Terra preta 1:3 with green waste compost.
- Application: Spread 0.5-1 cm thick (quantity covers 1-3 m²).
- Care: Mulch with grass clippings to retain nutrients.
5. Trees and shrubs
- Mix: Mix terra preta 1:5 with garden soil.
- Application: Fill the planting hole, water thoroughly and apply mulch.
6. Raised beds
- Use: Terra preta on its own.
- Dosage: Apply 15 litres per m².
- Care: Mulch the raised bed to prevent it drying out.
7. House, balcony and patio
-
Mix:
- Terra preta 1:1 to 1:3 with garden soil or peat-free multi-purpose compost.
- Alternatively: mix 1:1 to 1:2 with light mineral materials (e.g. perlite).
- Tip: Don't throw soil away; reuse it again and again and refresh it with terra preta.
Key nutrient values
- Nitrogen (N): 0.75%
- Phosphate (P₂O₅): 0.40%
- Potassium oxide (K₂O): 0.65%
The secret of terra preta
Biochar, produced by pyrolysis, is the key. It:
- Stores water and nutrients in its pores.
- Offers micro-organisms an ideal habitat.
- Promotes humus formation and soil life.
- Remains stable for centuries and ensures lasting fertility.
With terra preta, you turn your garden into a sustainable CO₂ sink and an oasis for healthy plant growth!
