The pats preparation according to Maria Thun

Maria Thun developed the pats preparation to increase soil fertility and counteract soil contamination.

The pats preparation plays a very important role in biodynamic agriculture, as it also takes over some of the functions of the biodynamic compost preparations. It is extremely good for soil health and soil life.

The pats preparation is based on cow manure to which the Demeter compost preparations, as well as lime in the form of ground eggshells and basalt sand have been added.

The later effect is created through a process called "dynamization". After several months of soiling the mixture, the actual preparation is created, which has roughly the consistency of fresh hummus.

The pats preparation consists exclusively of natural ingredients that, with the exception of the basalt sand, come from biodynamic Demeter agriculture.

How does the pats preparation according to Maria Thun work?

The Maria Thun® pats preparation is recommended in the guidelines of the Demeter Association in order to switch from conventional farming to Demeter farming. With the pats preparation, the soil is cleaned of impurities and its natural fertility is restored and increased.

But the pats preparation is not only used during the changeover. It is generally added when spreading manure and green manure to stimulate and accelerate processing by the soil. It is also used as protection against heavy contamination, e.g. excessive radiation exposure of the soil. It serves as a kind of soil recovery treatment that prepares the soil for the next year, keeps it alive, cleans it and promotes natural soil fertility.

Application in the garden:

Take 20ml of pats preparation and stir it in 2l of water for 20 minutes.

This amount is enough for 200 square meters of garden. You can remember that very well.

The stirred preparation can be used three days in a row and does not need to be stirred again.

If a syringe is used, the finished stirred preparation should be filtered to prevent clogging of the nozzles. A double nylon stocking has proven to be the best filter.

Now the preparation is put on the floor for three consecutive days.

The preparation should ideally be applied twice in March before sowing (three sprays each) and once in November after the harvest (three sprays each).
The ground should be frost-free.

Application in agriculture

Take 240g per hectare of pats preparation and stir it in 35 - 50 l of water for 20 minutes.

Distinction between cow pats and horse pats

While the cow pats preparation can be used on all plants, the horse pats preparation is particularly suitable for fruit trees and berries, as well as in viticulture. The horse pats preparation is also very suitable as a tree paste.

Store pats preparation

We store and ship the pats preparation earth-moist. We put it in small plastic bags for shipping only.

The preparation should be removed from the plastic packaging immediately upon arrival and poured into earthenware, wooden or glass containers.

If the preparation is to be stored for a long time, it should be stored in a cool, dark place. Although shielding the preparation with peat or coconut fiber is not essential for the pats preparation, the preparation is stored in an approx. 20cm thick layer of coconut fiber.
